Don grew up in central Illinois. Born in Decatur on April 9 1955. His father Donald Dean Bettis was a singing guitar player and a very good one. Donald Dennis Bettis, who went by his middle name Dennis in those days learned the guitar from his father. Donald Dennis won the outstanding senior musician "Arion Award" and recieved a Music Scholarship to the prestigious Millikin University in Decatur Illinois. He also was a founding member of the Lakelanders Country Opry Show in Decatur Illinois. Don also learned to play the piano and five string banjo, and just about every stringed instrument there is. Don moved to Nashville soon thereafter. In Nashville
Tennessee after doing a contestant spot on the "You Can Be A Star" program hosted by Jim Ed Brown from the Grand Old Opry and the Nashville Network." Don also did several televison Christmas Specials with the Grand Old Opry Star Billy Walker.
In 1988 Don became a christian at Christ Church in Nashville and became a Worship Leader and tenor section leader in the "Christ Church Chior." It was there Don met Naomi and Wynona Judd. Don played acoustic guitar for Wynona in downtown Nashville during a live show at the Bluebird Cafe. He also sang background vocals on the Judds Christmas CD as a singer in the Christ Church Choir recording studio group under the direction of Landy and Joy Gardner. Naomi Judd introduced Don to Johnny Cash, Walon Jennings and Jesse Colter.
